Oh Pinterest

It's been a while since I have posted anything on this blog, but I've been very busy!

I finished this all white quilt for my MIL. It was my first time piecing triangles and it was the first project I made on my new Husqvarna Viking sewing machine :) Which I LOVE! The triangles gave me a little bit of grief but I think it still turned out well. I'm pretty proud of it! My picture is shown in Black & White because I couldn't get the lighting to turn out quite right, but the actual colors were white with grey print.

I also helped my mom re-do her Christmas decorations this year. Here are some selected pictures of the pillows I put together for her. It took me almost a month and lots of hours on my new machine, but I think it was totally worth it and I'm really happy with how they turned out.
I've also joined Pinterest recently, which has NOT been good for my productivity! I've gotten caught up in a lot of the DIY projects out there and have had a hard time prioritizing. Here is evidence of my first experience with chalkboard paint. I bought these metal trays at Hobby Lobby and painted them with the black paint. I am really excited about them! They will make great serving trays for entertaining. I made a few extra, so you can see them here in my Etsy shop for sale! I know the pictures are pretty terrible, but my husband currently has custody of our Canon SLR, so I'm having to take pictures on my iPhone.

That's all for now! I have a few projects in progress, and will update with more soon!

Home Organization

This weekend I was feeling very proactive and decided to complete a few project I've had on my backlog for quite some time.

The first is repurposing project using some leftover ribbon from my wedding (which was three years ago this week). We used 1 1/2" black ribbon to tie bows around the napkins for the place settings. Being a functioning hoarder, I took all the ribbons home with me. While digging around in my old room at my parent's house, looking for items my sister might be able to use for her upcoming wedding, I came across an entire Central Market shopping bag full of these ribbons. I've been racking my brain for months for something to do with these ribbons because it would just break my heart to throw them all away. I've also been staring at stacks of magazine tear outs and miscellaneous paper and it hit me - I need a bulletin board! So I bought a cork board at Joann's and decided to weave the ribbons into a checkerboard effect on the cork. Here's a picture of the finished project!

I'm so excited to finish something I've been thinking about for a while and also to reuse something that probably would have gone to waste otherwise. I still have tons of ribbon leftover, so I think I'm going to get some smaller cork boards to cover and sell them in my Etsy shop.

So once I had completed something, I immediately moved on to the next project - getting my office organized post tax season. Luckily, my husband and I have a housekeeper that comes every two weeks. That has been one of the best decisions we have ever made as a married couple! Because of her, my house has stayed pretty clean and the laundry has always been done. However, my office has become a jumbled mess. I had been working so hard and trying to do as much as I could for my sister's bridal shower, that all of my supplies just got strewn around the room randomly. When I went in there this weekend there was barely enough room to walk! So this weekend I made it my mission to get more organized.

The next thing I wanted to try was to make some fabric storage bins to house some of the smaller items I use in my crafting. Right now I have larger Rubbermaid tubs and the smaller items are getting lost in those. The idea of having smaller bins to keep those in made me feel much better, but also the thought of using up a lot of the scraps of fabric I have made me very excited! I tried a few different patterns for making fabric bins, but I didn't find one that I liked. The two I tried utilized cardboard to make the bins stiffer, but I just had a hard time getting the lining and cardboard to fit exactly how I wanted to. I just couldn't see myself cranking out quite a few of these bins like I had expected. Instead, I decided to get some stiff fusible stabilizer so I wouldn't have to use cardboard. The stabilizer was stiff enough that I didn't even need to make a lining layer. Here are some pictures of my finished project.

I started out with some bland pink fabric that I knew I wouldn't be too upset about if I ended up tossing it. I plan on making my next bins in my favorite bright, graphic prints. I have enough leftover fabric and stabilizer that I will probably start selling these in my Etsy shop , too. I need to play around with larger sizes, though. This size bin is about six inches square. I'd like to make some that are a little larger and can serve different purposes.

So at this point it's only about noon and I'm moving right along! My husband is out playing golf, so I have the entire afternoon to work on whatever I want to!

About a year ago I was hosting a bridal shower for my best friend. I came up with quite a few projects to help get my house ready to host 25 people. I got in a time crunch and got a little overwhelmed, so some projects didn't get completed. I had bought quite a bit of foam to make some cushions for stools and the ledge by my fireplace so there would be more seating in my house. The foam was so expensive that I really needed to do something with it, but I've been struggling with motivation to do anything. Today I was feeling so ambitious, I decided to finally make the cushion to use on my fireplace.

This is what I ended up with! It's not perfect, but it's a pretty functional cushion that I think I can use for years to come.

Now that I've put a dent in my list of projects, it's time to get somethings listed on Etsy!

Anna's Daisy Chain Quilt

I know I've mentioned before that I've spent most of the last several months working on a Daisy Chain Quilt for my sister's wedding. Even amidst tax season and working on her bridal shower, I managed to crank it out in time for the shower! I was so excited to finish it, especially since each quilt I create turns out better than the last! My sister and her fiance both love lime green, so I used a color palette that I knew they would love. It took me a while to settle on the right one (not too much floral for the groom!) and I'm really happy with how it turned out!

I started with a pattern from Jelly Roll Quilts and adapted it a little bit to get where I wanted to go. Here are some pictures of the finished project!

I just love the fabric on the back! It's so beautiful that you could use the blanket pieced-side down if you wanted to!

I loved this quilt pattern and I think that with some graphic prints it looks really modern. This is the second quilt pattern I've used from this book, and I am really excited to start another one. They have both turned out even better than I had expected! So after a few month hiatus, expect a new quilt in my Etsy shop soon!

Bridal Shower

Well I know it has been quite a while since my last post. I have been really busy with tax season and trying to get everything together for my sister's bridal shower in Lubbock. Now that it is all over I have time to update my blog, my Etsy shop, and come up with all kinds of new projects!

Here are some pictures from my sister's bridal shower last weekend. Her other bridesmaids and I put together a baby blue and red themed shower with a vintage 50's housewife feel. It was a lot of work but I think we pulled off something amazing and my sister was totally thrilled with how it turned out! I love throwing parties and I can't wait to do it again soon! I tried quite a few new things with the decorations that I had never done before, and I look forward to putting those new skills to good use. I hope you enjoy!

Friendship Braid Quilt Update

Well I'm going to write this post about the main project I'm concentrating on right now and probably the most important one. I've set a goal for me to finish this Friendship Braid Quilt in the next week. I had finished piecing the front and back of the quilt a few days ago and really needed to get my butt in gear to baste and quilt the thing! So I purchased a showcase spot on Etsy for my quilt for December 18th, and you better believe I'll have the quilt done by then!

So tonight while catching up on some Law & Order episodes I ironed the two sides and then basted them together with some lightweight natural cotton batting in between. I like to use the lightweight batting, because I live in Texas and its just too hot ten months out of the year for anything heavier!! Since I haven't made any quilts to sell in my Etsy shop yet, I am still creating with myself in mind. Eventually I might branch out into thicker quilts, but for now I'm sticking to the lighter variety. I'd like for my creations to be used all year since I put so much love and effort into them!

Anyway, once I basted by quilt I started taping down lines for me to quilt along. I've decided not to "stitch-in-the-ditch" on this one, because it hasn't turned out as neat as I've wanted it to in the past. Plus, since I'm using a contrasting thread color on this one, I needed it to be perfect. So I've used masking tape to tape along the edges of the braid pieces and am quilting about 1/4" from that tape line. Once I've done the entire quilt in this direction, I will do the same on the lines perpendicular to the ones I've just made. This will make a traditional quilting pattern, but at an interesting angle, at least I'm hoping it will!

Here is a close up picture of my masking tape lines and the quilting I've done!

And here is the first view of the quilt backing. I took some scrap brown damask print that I had, and added in portions of the leftover braid cutouts. Then I used some white fabric to add a border.

I'm really excited about this quilt, and I'm already really proud of the work I've done on it. The quilting isn't taking me very long, so I have no doubt I'll get it done in the next week in time for my showcase! Look for it soon in my Etsy shop!

Holiday Season

I'm a CPA in Dallas, Texas with a knack for sewing and crafts. Once I get past each busy season, I struggle to focus on each project on my list of to-do's and get myself into a downward spiral of multitasking where nothing gets accomplished. I'm hoping this blog will help me keep myself more accountable for the projects I'm working on, and hopefully get more items posted in my Etsy shop!

I'm currently working on a couple of projects, as usual. The first is the Friendship Braid quilt from the book Jelly Roll Quilts. I'm making this quilt as an experiment in full size quilting, and hopefully will have it in my Etsy shop soon! I'm almost done piecing, and should start basting and quilting right after Thanksgiving. I'm using the Pure by Moda jelly roll in browns and blues. Here's a snapshot of how it's going so far:

The next project I'm working on is making some homemade Christmas gifts. I spent all day Saturday looking for some interesting vessels to turn into candles. I went to my local Goodwill hoping to repurpose some donated items, but I didn't find anything that was very interesting. Instead, I picked up a few items from TJ Maxx, and hope to find some more at garage sales or on another trip to Goodwill before the holidays. Here's a picture of the batch I have so far (they are not going to be a set, I bought each one with a specific person in mind).

Once I get past these few projects, I'm hoping to start a wedding quilt for my sister, who is getting married in June. I should have about six months to put it together, which I'm hoping will be plenty of time! Its going to be a Daisy Chain quilt, made up of floral and botanical Moda prints. I'm really excited about it! I just hope I don't lose steam while working through tax season! As I make some progress I'll post updates to these projects and new ones. In the meantime, please visit my Etsy shop to view the projects I've already completed!
